Frequently Asked Questions about applying to Psi Chi

Is the requirement for a 3.0 GPA firm? What if I have a 2.97?
Yes, the 3.0 GPA requirement is strictly enforced. Unfortunately, no matter how close to 3.0 it falls, the national part of the organization that oversees each chapter will not allow the chapter to accept anyone with less than a 3.0 GPA in psychology as well as overall, because it is an honor society. Your SFSU GPA does not have to be 3.0. For example, if you were a transfer student and got great grades at the community college level, but came to SF state and then got less than a 3.0 at SF state, that is okay. As long as your overall college GPA and psychology course GPA are 3.0 or above, you will be eligible.

How do I calculate my Psychology course GPA?
Log in to "MySFSU" and click on the right hand side "DARS report" - a report of your academic history will pop up. Then, scroll down to where it says "Psychology major: GPA and Unit Summary." It will tell you how many psychology classes you have taken and what your overall GPA for those psychology courses are. In order to verify this GPA, when you turn in your application, you will need to include a print out of your unofficial transcripts from any and all institutions you have attended.

Who do I make my $75 check with my application payable to?
Psi Chi.

I'm a graduating senior, should I even apply?

YES! A membership in Psi Chi lasts a lifetime! After graduation, you are welcome to attend any events Psi Chi holds. You will also continue to receive emails from your local chapter on workshops and events, unless you request otherwise.

What year do I have to be to apply?
You must at least be a second semester sophomore or have taken at least 9 psychology units as a transfer student before applying. However, you must also be a declared psychology major/minor and have established a GPA at SFSU.

If I join, am I required to come to any meetings?
We hold at least one chapter meeting each semester that we hope you can attend, but if you are unable to make it your membership will not be revoked. You will still be welcome at future events such as our workshops, fundraising events, volunteer opportunities, and much more.

How do I know if I will be accepted?
As long as you meet the chapter requirements (GPA, units, declared psychology major, etc.), turn in your check, and your transcripts, you will be accepted!

How long until I will know that if I was accepted or not?
We hope to inform our new members no later than one week after the deadline to turn in applications.

Is there something I get to wear at graduation that signifies my membership?
We will be making every effort to have coordinated stoles, cords, and/or medallions that reflect our membership in the Society to make available for purchase for graduation. Voting will take place with enough time for Psi Chi to order the materials for our graduates. If a universal agreement cannot be met, you will have the ability to purchase Psi Chi grad gear on the national website.
